WASHINGTON (Circa) -- Sen. John McCain's office has announced the Arizona congressman is in stable condition after being treated for an intestinal infection. The infection is related to diverticulitis.

McCain has been admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Ariz.

The statement reads, "on Sunday, Senator McCain was admitted to Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona, and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal infection related to diverticulitis. He is in stable condition. Over the last few months, Senator McCain has been participating in physical therapy at his home in Cornville, Arizona, as he recovers from the side effects of cancer treatment. He has remained engaged on his work as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and enjoyed frequent visits from his family, friends, staff and Senate colleagues. Senator McCain and his family are grateful to the senator's excellent care team, and appreciate the support and prayers they continue to receive from people all over the country.

The senator was diagnosed with cancer in July of 2017. During an interview on CNN in September, McCain said that his prognosis was "pretty good" but acknowledged that he was "facing a challenge" but that he was confident he would get through it. CNN anchor Jake Tapper asked him during the sit-down how he wanted to be remembered.

"He served his country, and not always right -- made a lot of mistakes, made a lot of errors -- but served his country, and I hope we could add, honorably," McCain said at the time.

McCain has remained active in his duties. As recently as March, McCain criticized President Trump for congratulating Vladimir Putin on his re-election as Russia's president saying "an American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections." In the past, McCain has referred to Putin as a murdered and a thug.

This news breaks on the same day it was announced that HBO is working on a documentary about the Arizona Republican.

HBO says the film will be "an illuminating, exclusive profile of one of the most influential forces in modern American politics." It is unknown when the actually documentary will be released.

    This is a developing story.
