SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. (WOLF) — There have been three confirmed deaths in the multi-vehicle crash near mile marker 116 on I-81 in Schuylkill County, according to first responders on the scene.
The crash happened around 10:45 AM Monday morning due to a snow squall.
First responders report the multi-vehicle crash involves a possible 40 to 50 cars and tractor-trailers.
Pennsylvania State Police reported a tanker truck on fire.
PennDOT says I-81 northbound is closed between Exit 107: US 209 - TREMONT/TOWER CITY and Exit 119: HIGHRIDGE PARK ROAD. All lanes closed.
The American Red Cross has responded to provide resources and assistance to affected motorists involved.
Red Cross Disaster Action Team members, in coordination with local officials and emergency responders will establish a reception center and provide a safe and warm central hub for motorists and their families to receive information, blankets, food, and drink.
