Shots fired in Hawley, man arrested
HAWLEY, WAYNE COUNTY (WOLF) —
A man was arrested early Tuesday morning in Wayne County after a reported shooting.
Officials say 47-year-old Shawn Birtel was at his residence with five named victims including seven children around 2 a.m.
Birtel was allegedly intoxicated as he was threatening to "kill them all" while searching for ammunition for an assault style weapon he was holding, according to the release.
The DA's office says someone took the weapon away from him but Birtel grabbed another firearm and started shooting from his bedroom.
Troopers say the five victims locked themselves in an upstairs bedroom and escaped out the window with an "emergency ladder" as Birtel was trying to get inside the room.
PSP says Birtel was arrested and charged with six counts of aggravated assault and one count of discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.
He is also facing 16 misdemeanors including terroristic threats, endangering the welfare of children, and simple assault, according to the DA's office.
Court papers say Birtel is currently behind bars at the Wayne County Prison unable to post $300,000 bail.
