UPDATE | Freeland Park shooting suspect facing homicide charges
UPDATE: The Luzerne County District Attorney's office confirms that Brandon Gambardella is also facing homicide charges.
UPDATE: The teenager shot at Freeland Park early Monday morning has died, according to family Facebook posts.
Anthony Bonney was 17 years old.
He was previously in critical condition and on life support.
Family posts say he was pronounced brain dead around 5 pm but was kept on life support so his organs could be donated.
He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hazleton and then to Geisinger Wyoming Valley for a gunshot wound around 2 am Monday, investigators say.
State Police have arrested 18-year-old Brandon Gambardella in connection to the shooting.
He's being charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault.
Court papers say Gambardella arranged to meet with Bonney and a friend via Facebook messenger to buy cocaine.
They go on to say that Bonney and his friend didn't have any, but decided to try and sell Gambardella a mix of drywall shavings and baking soda to get money.
Gambardella came with two friends to Freeland Park, near Main and Sabol Streets, for the exchange with Bonney.
Police say after exchanging $110 cash for the bag of assumed cocaine, Bonney began walking away, but Gambardella said he wanted to check if the drug was real.
Gambardella chased after Bonney and allegedly shot him, police say.
Witness statements from the scene say Gambardella didn't mean for the shooting to happen.
Gambardella was arraigned Monday afternoon and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing next month.
