Shapiro stresses safety, opportunity in community violence prevention visit to Philly

Governor Josh Shapiro joined Representative Amen Brown and local community leaders to visit Philadelphia’s Community Education Center where he met with young people and teachers participating in Beyond the Bars, a student-driven and community-based initiative that uses music education to interrupt cycles of violence. Thanks to the Governor’s work to increase funding for the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD)’s Violence Intervention and Prevention (VIP) program, Beyond the Bars has been able to expand its reach and positively impact more young Pennsylvanians.

Governor Josh Shapiro visited West Philadelphia today to highlight investments in community violence prevention. He stopped by Beyond the Bars, a youth music program that’s expanded with more than $530,000 in state funding.

Governor Shapiro said:

I firmly believe that every child of God in this city, across this Commonwealth, and I'd argue across this country, has a right to both be safe and feel safe in their community. To not have to lean over and tell the governor about loved one that perished because of gun violence in their community, but rather be free from that type of trauma.

The VIP initiative supports more than 130 programs across the Commonwealth, part of the Governor’s broader commitment to public safety and youth opportunity.
