PSP announce 243 DUI arrests over the Christmas Holiday

Pennsylvania State Police announced that there were 243 people arrested for driving under the influence between Dec. 23-Dec. 25.

Troopers were on the lookout for impaired drivers at DUI checkpoints as part of the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

The 243 arrests is down from the 314 arrests during the 2016 Christmas holiday. However, that driving period spanned 4 days

In addition to the arrests, state police also investigated 529 crashes over the long holiday weekend. 60 of which involved alcohol.

In total 102 people were injured and there were 5 fatalities, with alcohol as a factor in one fatal crash.

With New Year’s Eve celebrations this weekend, drivers are reminded to plan ahead for a safe ride home.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s SaferRide app is free to download and provides a way to call a taxi or friend for a ride if you have had too much to drink.
