Stroudsburg, Monroe Co. — It’s Community Champions week at Meals on Wheels in Monroe County which means local leaders and special guests are delivering meals all week.
The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau were today’s special guests.
“You know, we put it out there to our staff and those who were available, made sure that they cleared their schedule for the day," said Marlyn Kissner, VP of Membership & Community Relations at Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau. "And again, you know we’re working with our East Stroudsburg University student interns as well, so giving them the experience to give back so it’s going to be a great day, we’re excited to be here.”
The 7 volunteers from the Bureau went on the daily delivery route which has about 10-15 stops around Monroe County.
Meals on Wheels says they do this every March and have had local mayors and supervisors come in this week.
“To shine a spotlight on what we do and also get a firsthand idea of what volunteering with us means and also the connection, the important connection with our clients," said Stacey Koeck, Special Events Coordinator at Meals on Wheels Monroe County.
Meals on Wheels tells say they are also looking for more volunteers since the number of people they have served have grown this year.
“We’re upwards of 300 right now which is the largest we’ve seen in a long time, there seems to be an increased need since the first of the year and that makes the routes longer," said Koeck.
They hope to get more volunteers to cover the extra need.
“We have a small staff that does the administrative behind the scenes work but without volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to continue in the county," said Koeck.
And they said volunteers can work as little as once a month to once a week.
