Homicide, standoff in Northumberland County

SHAMOKIN, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WOLF) -- The suspect in Monday night's fatal shooting was injured in an hours-long standoff with local and state police, officials say.

41-year-old Jose Colon was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

"He didn't want to come out and the cops started trying to negotiate it and it was just one big mess for quite a while," said Eugene Daya, who was on his way to the nearby Turkey Hill last night.

Around 8:30 Monday night, Police were called to the corner of Rock and Spurzeim streets for reports that a woman had been shot and killed.

A local fire police captain says Colon fled the scene to an apartment building on Sunbury St.

That block was evacuated and closed throughout the night and into much of Tuesday.

"I watched from the window, I was threatened, told to shut the lights off. This guy was shooting like anything that moved," said Vic Basso, who lives down the road from Colon.

Officials say the Dunkin' Donuts across the street was on lockdown during the standoff.

"They were running and chasing some fella, Jose, he lives on the top floor a block from me. And they kept telling him to surrender and give himself up," said Basso.

Court papers show Colon lives there with his roommate - who says when he got home around 9, Colon pointed a gun at his face and held him hostage.

The roommate escaped later through a window.

"I thought I seen some things but wow. It's hard to believe,"said Joe McGinley, who was stopping at the Dunkin' Donuts.

Monday night and early into the morning, local and state police surrounded the apartment.

"There was about six of them. I seen them getting rifles out of the trunk of their car and putting on these bulletproof vests," said said Daya.

They engaged in several hours of negotiations and shot at each other.

Witnesses heard Colon say he didn't want to go back to jail.

"This was a nice town and it's changing rapidly, fast, fast," said Basso.

Officials say that some local schools were put on a two hour delay in light of the standoff.

Police have not released the name of the woman who died.

There is no word on Colon's condition.
