(WOLF) — As the weather gets colder, a warning if you see your hand sanitizer freezing.
Most are alcohol-based, with freezing temperatures at, or lower than, -50 degrees Fahrenheit.
That means they should not be impacted as temperatures continue to dip.
The one exception is if your sanitizer doesn't have the right mix of ingredients.
"If it has enough of the alcohol it should not freeze in our conditions," said Dr. Jodi Lenko, the vice chair of the Department of Medicine at Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton. "So yes, if one of your alcohol- sanitizers freezes, I would recommend throwing it out and buying a new one."
There are instructions for making your own sanitizer on the World Health Organization's website.
Making sure yours is effective, plus wearing a mask, will also help as we reach the height of cold and flu season.
