Stroudsburg (Monroe County) - Ever since an initial draft-majority opinion about overturning Roe V. Wade by U-S Supreme Court Justices was leaked, protests have erupted throughout the country. And northeast Pennsylvania is no exception.
The Monroe County NAACP held a 'freedom rally' in support of abortion rights on Courthouse Square in Stroudsburg. Attending the rally were Stroudsburg Mayor Tarah Probst, Democratic State Representative Maureen Madden, and Women's Resources of Monroe County Executive Director Lauren Peterson. Women held signs saying 'keep abortion safe and legal'... 'remember this on election day', 'my body, my choice', and 'Supreme Court equals American Taliban'. The Monroe County NAACP says if that leaked initial draft majority opinion is true, they say it would not only take away a women's right to choose, but also hurt women of color and the poor.
Racheal Grimes was at that rally Monday. She told FOX 56 she does not believe it's a good move for states to create their own laws.
"I believe 100 percent that the federal law might be overturned," Grimes said. "I have no doubts about it and do not stand for it to be overturned either."
Now IF Roe V. Wade is overturned , it would end a federal protection of abortion rights and allow each state to create their own law either to protect, put restrictions on or deny abortions altogether. According to a recent CNN poll, Americans remain broadly opposed to overturning Roe V. Wade.
The final decision by the High Court could come as soon as soon as June or July.
