Couple killed in Mexico bus crash has local connection
WILKES-BARRE (WOLF-TV) —
Earlier this week, we told you about a bus crash in Mexico that killed 12 people.
Two of the people killed have a local connection.
Monna Harman hasn't seen her cousin Andy Fritz in more than two decades.
"It was over twenty years ago, but when I was growing up, our family was really close. But everyone moved to different areas, so we haven't seen each other in a while for that reason,” Harman said.
Andy's father is originally from the Berwick area, but he grew up in New York State.
Now living in Washington State with his wife Jody and their two children, the couple was on a Caribbean cruise.
On Tuesday, they were on board a bus in southeastern Mexico when the driver lost control.
The bus flipped over, killing 12 people.
Eight Americans were on board, including Andy and Jody.
"It was devastating. Like really, when you hear that a family member has passed away, it really affects you. He was such a sweet guy,” Harman added.
Instead of celebrating Christmas this weekend with family, Andy's brother Sam and his wife Diana are in Mexico, claiming the bodies and bringing them home to Washington.
The family has set up a Go Fund Me account to cover the unexpected travel costs.
Monna's son, Brendan McGinnis, is now trying to spread the word.
"For this time of year to be so hard on our family, I really felt like I should do something about this,” McGinnis said.
McGinnis says it is the season of giving after all.
"I wanted to share the information to the people that may want to give, especially during the holiday season. This is the time to do that, especially for people that are struggling,” McGinnis said.
Harman says her family's loss put things into perspective.
"It makes you really appreciate what you have. And realizing things very quickly can change. You don't know what's going to happen,” Harman said.
