BERWICK, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WOLF) -- A historic site in Columbia County could receive a major facelift.
Organizations in Berwick are hoping to restore the former Berwick train station to its former glory.
A group called Berwick: The Next Step says the former train station used to be the lifeblood of the borough. They hope restoring it will bring back that spark.
"If you can say that the railroad industry built America, you can just as easily say that Berwick built the trains that built America," Josh Nespoli said.
Decades ago, a lively travel center greeted visitors to the borough.
Nespoli. a lifelong resident, says it was the heart of the town and a boon for industry.
"Berwick was the largest manufacturer of railroad cars in the Eastern U.S."
Berwick: the Next Step is hoping to restore the 115-year-old freight train station and bring new life to the area.
The group wants to build shops, and trails for hiking and biking. Nespoli dreams of the site becoming a haven for entertainment where Berwick could hold festivals.
This proposal still has a long way to go before it becomes a reality.
Proponents need to gain public support and find ways to fund the project.
