SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — On Friday morning, Congressman Cartwright (PA-08) unveiled over $180 million dollars in funding to increase Federal Bureau of Prison hiring efforts nationwide.
The Congressman held a press conference outside of his Scranton district office on Wyoming Avenue.
The increase in funding will go towards the recruitment, retention and hiring of qualified corrections officers.
In attendance was the Williams family, whose son Eric was a senior officer at United States Penitentiary, Cannon.
Eric was murdered by an inmate his family feels that if there was another officer with him, there may have been a different outcome.
"I am extremely grateful to Congressman Cartwright for getting this money allocated to the Bureau of Prisons to hire proper staffing, that can bring these to safe levels" says Donald Williams, father of the late Senior Officer, Eric Williams.
Cartwright says that he and Senator Bob Casey will be watching how the money is distributed and spent to make sure it is bettering the federal prison system in our area.
