Airport hosts pop-up event for residents to pre-verify for Real ID
The Wilkes Barre Scranton International Airport hosted a Real ID pre-verification pop-up event on Thursday.
In Pennsylvania, the deadline to obtain a Real ID is October 1st, 2020, but the ID's will be available as soon as the spring of 2019.
Residents who pre-verify will receive their Real ID in the mail, as opposed to getting it at PENNDOT driver's license center.
"They're going to be able to use that and save themselves a trip when the real ID is being released," said Carl Beardsley, the executive director of Wilkes Barre Scranton International Airport.
Several representatives from the Real I-D program were on sight answering questions.
They say the Real ID program is supposed to reduce identity fraud.
Most people in line said they wanted to get a head-start on the process so they wouldn't have issues boarding commercial flights.
"My husband and I fly a lot, so we wanted to be ahead of the game with the Real ID," said Sue Sakson.
She says her daughter lives in Colorado, so it's important for her to be able to travel.
"We want to be able to visit her and get ahead of this whole Real ID thing," said Sakson.
There will be two more pop-up events at the Wilkes Barre Scranton International Airport.
The events are slated for December 13 and January 17.
