Health First | Geri-Fit Classes

a geri-fit class in Pittston

The age of the ‘fitness folks’ in this class ranges from 60’s to 80’s but each one of them will tell you they feel like a million thanks to the Health & Wellness program offered by the Area Agency on Aging for Luzerne and Wyoming Counties.

This particular class at the Senior Center in Pittston is called Geri-Fit and it’s designed exclusively for people 60 and over to re-build strength that’s lost through the aging process.

There’s no dancing or choreography just a sturdy chair, a set of light weights, a stretchy band and a certified Geri-Fit instructor like Anita Lopresto.

“it’s basically arthritis range of motion and being active and stronger and a way to get together and have a good time.”

All of the exercises have a purpose, whether to improve balance or increase cardiovascular activity.

Charles Free of Kingston says, “she works with each individual to bring out the best. I got quite involved and I used to weigh 177 now I’m 157. This program has taken my physical activity to the utmost.”

For most people in the class, the physical aspects are great AND they like the sense of belonging and interacting.

Beverly Gale of Duryea says, “it’s just a fun time, whereas we get older we need a social way of doing things.”

Classes like this one and other types of exercise are offered at active adult centers and community sites throughout Luzerne and Wyoming counties.

There are many free health & wellness classes offered through the Area Agency on Aging in Luzerne and Wyoming counties for those 60 years and older.
