Volpe's Views: Laureen Cummings on medical marijuana in PA
The PA Legislature two years ago approved medical marijuana in Pennsylvania, but Lackawanna County Republican Commissioner Laureen Cummings apparently did not know that at a recent commissioners’ meeting. Maybe she was out of the country for the last two years.
She said, “Are you telling me the legislature did this,” and then she added, “when was it passed by the legislature…I’ll have to see who voted for it.”
Adding to her apparent ignorance on the subject, Ms. Cummings, a nurse, matter-of-factly declared that there are no studies done to prove it does anything except for nausea and get you high.
In reality, however, there have been dozens of studies done, one of which suggests that opiate deaths were down over 20 percent in states where medical marijuana is legal.
This was confirmed in a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
There is an old adage, “Better to be thought a fool then open your mouth and leave no doubt.”
Apparently Ms. Cummings is unaware of this saying.
