The Volpe Report with U of Scranton President, Father Pilarz

    We welcome to today’s show The Reverend Scott Pilarz, S.J., the 26th president of the University of Scranton.

    Father Pilarz was born in Pennsauken NJ, graduating from Camden Catholic High School. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University. Father entered the Society of Jesus in 1981 and was ordained a Catholic priest within the Jesuit Order in 1992.

    The level of erudition to become a Jesuit is legendary and normally takes 12 years to complete. Father Pilarz obtained three master’s degrees, which include a master’s in Philosophy from Fordham University as well as two additional master’s degrees in Theology and Divinity from Weston School of Theology.

    Father then went on to complete his doctoral degree in English from the City University of New York. His doctoral dissertation earned the Achievement Prize for Dissertation Excellence from CUNY. Father Pilarz has a long and distinguished teaching career. He taught Philosophy at St. Peter and Paul Seminary in Nigeria, he was a professor of English at St. Joseph University in Philadelphia, became an assistant professor of English at his alma mater, Georgetown University, where he was honored with an award for faculty excellence, service and teaching.

    He was appointed University Chaplin at Georgetown. In 2003, Father Pilarz was named President of the University of Scranton, where in his tenure between 2003 and 2011 he presided over the largest capital improvement project in the University’s history. Some of that development included the $83 million dollar Unified Science Center, the $35 million dollar Student Center and two new $33 million dollar dormitories.

    In 2010, author Ronald Shapiro profiled Father Pilarz along with other individuals in his book, Dare To Prepare: How to Win Before You Begin, which became a New York Times bestseller. After leaving the University in 2011, the Board of Trustees of Marquette University in Milwaukee unanimously selected Father Pilarz as Marquette University‘s 23rd president.

    On March 21st, 2017, the University of Scranton that Father Pilarz would succeed Father Quinn as the 26th president of the University.
