Friday Night Rival Preview
There are still questions surrounding Valley view, but the Cougars do return quarterback Chandler Fuller their top rusher, their 2nd leading rusher Traon jones who scored 6 touchdowns and linebacker Sam Pittsman who led the team with 105 tackles.
George Howanitz, Valley View's coach, says, "We have some kids coming back hat I think got a lot of playing time last year and got better as the year went on. Maybe weren’t lighting the world on fire weeks 1 through 5 but when we got into the playoffs I think they were doing a pretty good job for us."
Sam Pittsman, Valley View senior, says, " it is going to be tough at first they are going to be young but they're going to step up and we are going to be alright."
Lakeland has even bigger holes to fill. Quarterback Nico Piraino is one of three starters back on offense.
The Chiefs will be young all around and they may play 4 true freshmen every game.
Jeff Wasilchak, Lakeland's coach, says , "We have kids that want to work hard. E don’t have a whole lot of returning starters but do have a lot of kids that see opportunity and they are trying to take advantage of the opportunity."
Nico Piraino, a Lakeland Senior, says, "I feel that we have talent because of lot of these guys worked hard. They saw what it was like to have a successful season and like I said the young guys on the freshman team had success on their own so they are looking to just jump right in and help."
Lakeland has won 6 straight season opening games including last year’s dramatic overtime win over Valley View. So, when the Cougars made the trip here to Chapman Lake to take on the Chiefs they’ll be looking for a little revenge.
George Howanitz says, " Well I don’t know. It is always a big game. I think even if each team isn’t going to be that good going into the year. It’s a hit them in the jaw type of game and it has been like that forever so."
Jeff Wasilchak says, "It is a great Rivalry between the schools, between the kids, the bordering districts, it has been a rivalry forever. It is always good to start off like that."
