Wilkes-Barre church assistant treasurer admits to embezzling thousands
WILKES-BARRE (WOLF) -- St. Stephen's Episcopal Church says their assistant treasurer was embezzling payments and other donations made in the church's offering plates.
The church was installing new financial software and discovered their numbers didn't add up.
Priest Brian Pavlac says David Williams admitted to stealing $10,000 during 2017.
Williams is a licensed CPA and has been volunteering to help with the church's finances since 2005.
St. Stephen's is investigating whether that amount is higher and if he began embezzling earlier than last year.
The Franklin Street church has around 200 members, to whom they announced the incident during Sunday's service.
Rev. Pavlac says that Williams has grown up in the area and the church.
An official report has been filed with Wilkes-Barre City Police.
