Prosecutor drops charge against mayor
CANTON, BRADFORD COUNTY (WOLF) -- A charge of patronizing prostitutes that was filed against the mayor of Canton has been withdrawn.
There was no evidence besides the confession of Mayor John Vineski, 60, according to District Attorney Dan Barrett.
A legal rule called "corpus delicti" requires more evidence that a crime occurred, Barrett said.
Canton police did not consult with prosecutors before filing the charges, and this type of issue is fairly routine, according to Barrett's statement.
The police investigation "did bring a bad situation to light and hopefully to an end," Barrett's statement said.
Meantime, Vineski had lost the May primary by 12 votes and his term will run out in the new year.
