Man dies after New Year's Day crash
SCRANTON (WOLF) -- A man is dead after a New Year's Day crash in Lackawanna County.
Conrad Thiel, 30, Taylor, died around 1:30 a.m. following a crash at Davis Street near Jones Avenue in Scranton, coroner Tim Rowland said.
He suffered multiple traumatic injuries in the crash, which was ruled accidental.
The Chevy Silverado pickup truck was heading westbound on Davis Street when he crashed into a utility pole on the south side of the road, police Lt. Marty Crofton said.
The call came in around 12:50 a.m. Firefighters extricated Thiel from the pickup and he was taken to GCMC, police said.
One neighbor says she called 9-1-1 but it was busy.
"And I heard a bang. I thought it was a backfire, right? I didn't know what it was and I got up and I looked, and in the meantime, some girl is out there flagging the cars down," says neighbor Marie Le Rose.
"That's terrible because they say the person was from Taylor, so he wasn't very far away from home. It's just a heartache when someone dies on a holiday, or anytime," says neighbor Jude Kane.
Police are investigating. According to a Facebook page, Thiel posted that he was going to a New Year's party at The Woodlands Inn last night.
Relatives and friends posted they were heartbroken and will miss him forever.
