Free outdoor movies planned for summer
WILKES-BARRE (WOLF) -- A neighborhood association in Wilkes-Barre is planning for a summer of free family-friendly movies on Friday nights.
The South Wilkes-Barre Residents' Association, which started two years ago, is working with the Skyhawks Soccer League to put together the program.
It will start on June 16 and run each Friday through Aug. 4 at the Gordon Avenue soccer fields.
Group president George Brown says the Skyhawks will sell concessions and seek sponsors to help pay for it.
"We're opening up the gates at 7 p.m. People can come and bring their families and have a picnic before we start the movies," says Brown.
Brown says they have to buy an inflatable screen and also pay about $400 to license each movie. He says the city council on Thursday approved them going past curfew to 11:30 p.m. if needed.
"We're showing family-friendly movies and then they'll have a nice evening that they can meet new people, meet other neighbors, work together, bring the community together," says Brown.
