Six students injured after bus crash

It was a scary morning for some vo-tech students in Wyoming County after their school bus crashed into a delivery truck.

Police say six students were taken to the hospital after the wreck with minor injuries.

A box truck on its side and a school bus with front-end damage.

This was what first responders found after a crash around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 29 at Aldovin Road, six miles north of Tunkhannock.

"We found a two-car motor vehicle accident, a Tunkhannock Area school bus, into a Penske truck delivering some supplies for Lowe's or one of the appliance stores," says Tunkhannock Ambulance Chief Mike Markovitz.

Police say the Penske rental truck driven by Nilton Gomes, 38, Brockton, Mass., had stopped at Meshoppen Creek Road, which comes in at angle from the side.

Then, the truck went across both lanes into the path of the bus, driven by Brenda Hoover, 61, Monroe Township, which was heading north.

"We had nine students on the bus and the driver on the bus," says Markovitz.

Six out of the nine students were taken to Tyler Memorial Hospital for evaluation with suspected minor injuries, after their trip to the Susquehanna County vo-tech school near Dimock ended suddenly.

"It looks like the Penske truck was coming across the road and the school bus was going north on 29," says Markovitz. "The school bus hit the Penske truck on the side."

The schools superintendent was not here at her office when we stopped by. Now, a trooper says he will be reviewing video from inside the bus that apparently shows the crash.

A man in the truck says he was delivering appliances from Allentown with RAS Delivery Services. The truck flipped onto its side.

We did not get to speak with the bus driver, who left with a school district worker.

"We hope to never see a school bus in an accident, but we're here to just take care of the patients and do what we have to do," says Markovitz.

Police are still investigating the crash. They say both drivers were wearing their seatbelts at the time.

Earlier Story: A Tunkhannock Area School District bus was involved in a crash with a Penske truck just before noon on Wednesday.

Officials say six of the nine Vo-Tech students on board suffered minor injures and were taken to the hospital for evaluation.

The crash happened at the intersection of Meshoppen Creek Road and Route 29 in Lemon Township, Wyoming County.

Police say the bus tried to cross both lanes of Route 29, but got right in the path of the bus.

The bus hit the truck on the passenger side and caused the truck to roll sideways onto the driver's side.

The accident is still being investigated.
