Volpe's Views on Low Voter Turnout
Franklin Delano Roosevelt once said, "Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting."
That quote came to mind the other day when I read a report on the November 7 General Election. According to the State's Bureau of Elections, less than 26.5% registered voters statewide cast ballots in the last election.
As underwhelming as that number is, one wonders why a majority of people can't take the time to exercise a their right to choose leaders when so many men and women have made the supreme sacrifice to preserve it.
All too frequently we hear people bitterly complaining about the state of our government, but given the statistics that about three out of every four registered voters never even bothered to go to the polls one wonders if non voters have a valid right to complain.
